Ship's Wheel

Be Ye Doers

Are you a 'forgetful hearer?' James delivered a message, echoing the teachings of Christ, that I want to discuss today concerning forgetful hearers. I’m going to use the KJV as the phrasing should be familiar to many.

I will stop and emphasize several key points throughout. ‭‭

James‬ ‭1:19-27‬ ‭KJV‬‬: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls."

Let’s read this last portion again. This saying of James fits beautifully within the sayings of Jesus: “...and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls." Have you ever stopped and really grasped the importance and necessity of this action? “...receive with meekness...” Jesus explained a little more about what 'receiving with meekness' means. To receive with meekness, one must become like a little child. A little child or baby is the visual and physical representation of how to receive with meekness, for they can do nothing on their own and are completely dependent upon their parents.

What is the latter portion of that sentence speaking of? What is to be received of in meekness; “the engrafted word”? What is this engrafted word he speaks of? We know The Father, Son & Holy Spirit are “The Word” John‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This saying fits perfectly with the teachings of Christ in that we are grafted in. He is the vine and we are the branches grafted in.

We know once born again of spirit God’s Spirit dwells within us and us in him. “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”‭‭John‬ ‭17:21‬ ‭KJV‬‬Clearly the engrafted word James speaks of is the Holy Spirit. He goes on to say “which is able to save your souls.” “Receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. “ God’s Holy Spirit received with meekness is able to truly save your souls! God’s Spirit can cleanse and transform you if you allow him.

‭‭”But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”‭‭James‬ ‭1:19-27‬ ‭KJV

‬‬Anyone who abides in God will be transformed. Those who are forgetful; resisting God’s spirit not being a doer of The Word will be those on the last day whom Jesus says “I never knew you”. Remember you are to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world! Do not deceive yourself and turn away following your own desires. Remain in Christ keeping yourself unspotted from the world.

With love and the good news of Christ I desire nothing more than God’s will on earth as it is in Heaven.
