Authority

From Whence Is Your Authority?

Jesus asked them;

The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men?

I want to ask you;

Where do you believe John the Baptist received authority?

Where does your religion say Johns authority was from?

I ask you this because this is a very important teaching from Jesus found in Matthew 21:23-27

The authority that guides you and the authority by which you operate have eternal consequences!

Many religions teach that Johns authority came by lineage of men which they claim was instituted by God. But what did Jesus say? After all shouldn’t we be listening to the Son of God rather than the understanding of men?

“Then Jesus went into the temple courtyard and began to teach. The chief priests and the leaders of the people came to him.

They asked, “What gives you the authority to do these things?

Who told you that you could do this?”

Jesus answered them, “I, too, have a question for you. If you answer it for me, I’ll tell you why I have the right to do these things.

Did John’s authority come from heaven or from men?”

They discussed this among themselves. They said, “If we say, ‘from heaven,’ he will ask us, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘from men,’ we’re afraid of what the crowd might do.

All those people think of John as a prophet.” So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus told them, “Then I won’t tell you how I have the authority to do these things.”

Matthew 21:23-27

If you didn’t know Jesus and his teachings you might say he avoided the answer but in his great wisdom he actually got them to reveal the true answer.

Jesus knew that they did know where Johns authority was from but refused to accept it.

Just a short while later Jesus tells these same men;

I can guarantee this truth: Tax collectors and prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.

John came to you and showed you the way that God wants you to live, but you didn’t believe him.

The tax collectors and prostitutes believed him. But even after you had seen that, you didn’t change your minds and believe him.”

Matthew 21:31-32

Had Johns authority actually been through a priesthood lineage of his father they would have surely made that case, because that would have won the argument in their mind.

After all they were the religious “authorities” and they were insinuating that it was them who had the authority and not Jesus.

They knew the authority by which John operated wasn’t as theirs but their pride wouldn’t not accept this truth. They had been shown true authority but they rejected it.

In Jesus’s statement he also is saying that his authority and Johns authority is of the same source.

So what is the source of Johns authority?

Johns authority is from God. More specifically The spirit of God!

Luke 1:13-17

“The angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer.

Your wife Elizabeth will have a son, and you will name him John. He will be your pride and joy, and many people will be glad that he was born.

As far as the Lord is concerned, he will be a great man.

He will never drink wine or any other liquor.

He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.

He will bring many people in Israel back to the Lord their God. He will go ahead of the Lord with the spirit and power that Elijah had. He will change parents’ attitudes toward their children.

He will change disobedient people so that they will accept the wisdom of those who have God’s approval. In this way he will prepare the people for their Lord.”

Luke 1:13-17 GW

Speaking of John the Angel said

“He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.”

The angel goes on to tell him what John would do with his spirit guided life and we see that it is by The Holy Spirit the John received authority.

We also know from scripture that Jesus lived by the Holy Spirit and it was by this Authority of God that Jesus lived and worked many miracles.

As Christ’s death was drawing near he offered this prayer for us. Future believers after praying for his disciples.

John 17:20-26

Jesus said “I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.

May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity.

Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

John 17:20-26

Every time I hear this prayer of Christ if feel his great love for us! If you haven’t read this prayer in a while I urge you to go back and read his full prayer to The Father recorded in John Chapter 17.

Here Jesus prays that all of us may be one.

He says; Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.

Jesus says; May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity.

This glory is that of God Spirit! He is drawing the parallel between Him and the Father and Him and Us!

Christ reintegrates this union again in closing.

“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

What a powerful gift Christ has given those who belong to him!

What powerful authority this is that come from God!

There is no higher authority man can have than this authority made available through Christ by God’s Holy Spirit.

To hold on to an authority of men is a rejection of Christ and The Holy Spirit of God!

To hold on to an authority of men is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and it leads to death. Do not be deceived! All authority is in Christ and he made it available to his followers.

Read the words of Christ we have preserved in the Bible! Seek Christ in all things!

Seek God’s Holy Spirit for all Wisdom and Authority because it is God which holds all wisdom and authority.

Let God’s Holy Spirt guide and teach you all things!

There is no one greater than our God!
